A glimpse of geology!

Calanque is an old glaciated valley immersed by the sea.

140 million years ago, all the region of Cassis, Provence and even Alps place, were under the sea level. Calcareous sediments constituted essentially by fossilized marine bodies contributed to the formation of the calcareous rocks of our Calanques.

The completion of Provence and rise of the Alps took place approximately 30 million years ago in the same time as the digging of Mediterranean sea.

Massif of Calanques really established such as we know it today 3 milllion years ago.

After the Quaternary era, following reheating, the melting sea ices causes an increase of the sea level and provokes torrents, cold, corrosive and acid rains for calcareous rocks, the flow if which is going to stress the digging of Calanques.

It explains the formation in our Calanques, lots of caves and subterranean rivers but also of arcs, candles and needles which make all the originality and the beauty of our site.
